Amazon’s Logistics Facility Proposal Can Benefit Southeast San Francisco With A Commitment To Work With The Community

Amazon’s proposal to build a logistics facility at 900 Seventh Street is a unique opportunity to create a win-win development for both the surrounding community and Amazon. Without argument, the proposal will have long-term impacts on the area, including such issues as increased truck traffic, poorer air quality, noise and light pollution, and economic pressure on locally-owned businesses. The proposal, however, does present an opportunity to offset these impacts through Amazon’s willingness and desire to work with the community to address important quality of life issues facing the district including affordable housing, local job creation, livable wages and benefits, food deserts, open space, and pedestrian-friendly streets.

Amazon needs to make their proposal about the community!

Amazon can and should work with and invest in southeast San Francisco. The Bay Area is an obvious market target for Amazon. The successful location of a logistics facility at 900 7th Street will put Amazon in the heart of the Bay Area, with the ability to move a fleet of deliveries into The City, the peninsula, and the immediate East Bay. It will give the company an additional strategic advantage over its competitors by streamlining logistics, saving Amazon both time and money. District 10 is a diverse community that faces many challenges such as a lack of affordable housing, a lack of open space and parks, a lack of jobs with liveable wages, and a lack of safe streets for pedestrians and bicyclists. A potential positive addition to District 10.

SFSEA believes the proposed Amazon project can be a positive addition to the community if they work together with the community and contribute meaningfully towards improving the quality of life for those living and working in the community. Our Alliance wants the Amazon project to succeed if they are willing to partner with the community, but its success is contingent on meeting the Bay Area’s standards.

Our Alliance

The San Francisco Southeast Alliance (SFSEA) is committed to improving and protecting the lives and livelihood of our residents and locally owned businesses. Our growing Alliance of local residents, community leaders, advocacy groups, labor, and business owners seek to work collaboratively with the city, developers, or corporations looking to locate or build projects in our area that meet our community values and needs. We are adamant in opposing any proposal that will result in such impacts as gentrification, loss of affordable housing, unsafe streets, low-wage jobs, or harmful environmental impacts.
